Addax are grazers which means they are similar to cows - in this sense, their meat does not taste gamey. Addax meat is highly prized and sought after because of how lean and extremely delicious it is.
Addax are desert-living antelopes that are well adapted to harsh habitats. They feed on desert grasses mainly but if unavailable, they will browse on melons, tubers and scrub that it can find in its desert habitat. Addaxes are masters at water conservation and are able to attain all the water they need from their food. This allows the addaxes’ range to not be restricted by water sources. Due to this conservation, addaxes only excrete dry feces and concentrated urine.
The color of the addax coat depends on the season - in winter, it is greyish-brown with white hindquarters and legs, and long, brown hair on the head, neck, and shoulders; in the summer, the coat turns almost completely white or sandy blonde to reflect the desert heat. Addax can live up to 19 years in the wild and 25 years in captivity.
