The blackbuck is an antelope species native to the Indian subcontinent. Males and females have a distinctive coloration. Male blackbucks are dark brown (getting darker with age and almost black at 5 or years old), black, white and have long twisted horns. Females are fawn/tan colored with no horns. Blackbuck have a body length of 3.3-5 feet, shoulder height of 2.0-2.8 feet and weight of 65-100 lbs. The horns of the blackbuck are ringed with 1 to 4 spiral turns – rarely more than 4 turns – and can be as long as 31 inches. In the male, the upper body is black (dark brown), and the belly and eye rings are white. They are also considered one of the best wild game meats around.
Blackbucks are very fast with speeds of more than 50 mph. Blackbucks are beautiful, and stand out in an open plain – especially when excited and jumping.

Blackbuck Behavior and Breeding
Blackbuck antelope tend to inhabit open grasslands and are considered one of the fastest animals in the world. One of the best attributes of the blackbuck antelope is that they are plains grazers which makes them great eye candy while driving around your ranch. They are also considered one of the best eating wild game meats around. Their keen eyesight and speed allows them to easily avoid predators. When alarmed, the herd will disperse quickly with high leaps and then begin a fast gallop. They are grazers that feed primarily on grass in open prairies but they will also consume leaves, herbs and shrubs. Breeding can occur throughout the year, with peaks seen from August to October and March to April. While they usually only give birth to one fawn at a time, blackbuck have a short gestation period of 5 months which allows for two breeding cycles per year. This often results in two young born in a twelve month period. Blackbuck reach sexual maturity at a year and a half (as young as eight months) and usually live 10 to 12 years, some reaching 15 years.
