The Grant's zebra is one of the six subspecies of the plains zebra. They are from eastern and southern Africa and live in the grasslands, savannas and even some woodlands. Of all the sub-species, Grant's Zebras are the most desirable due to their incrediblly sharp black and white stripes and coats.
Grant’s zebras generally grow to be 4-5ft tall, and weigh between 500-700 pounds. Grant’s zebras live an average of 20 years. The males on average are 10% larger than their female counterparts. Zebras have excellent eyesight and hearing, and can run up to 40 mph. Each zebra's stripes are unique. Just as no two human fingerprints are alike, no two zebras have the same stripe pattern.

Zebra Behavior and Breeding
Zebras are extremely strong and smart. They are hardy animals and can withstand average drought conditions and will eat almost anything. Zebras need a good amount of room to move around and graze, and should not be confined to a small space. Zebras can jump a low fence with ease so 8ft fencing is recommended to ensure safety. They are less trusting than horses, their flight instincts are high and they tend to react without thinking. If stressed, they will run straight through wire fencing or anything with spacing. Zebras are well known for escaping and will test the fencing if it is not solid.
Zebras are a great addition to any high game fenced ranch. They can coexist with cattle, horses, and many other exotics. Being herd animals, they do best with a zebra pasture companion. They also make good animal guardians. At Summit Whitetails, we place them near breeding pens to keep coyotes and other predators away.
Zebras are fascinating to watch but if you are a hunter, the Grant zebras are considered to have the most desirable skins due to their intense black and white stripes. In addition, zebra are grass grazers so their meat is a lean source of protein and a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, vitamin B12, and iron.
