Fallow deer are native to most of Europe, but have been introduced widely elsewhere. The male fallow deer is known as a buck, the female is a doe, and the young a fawn. Adult bucks are 55-63 inches long with a 33-37 inch shoulder height, and typically 150-220 lbs in weight. Does are 51-59 inches long with a 30–33 inches shoulder height, and 65-110 lbs in weight. The life span is around 12-16 years.
The species has great variations in the color of their coats, with three main variations: white, melanistic, and common (referred to “white, chocolate and spotted”). The common, or spotted fallow, resemble the look of an axis deer. Only bucks have antlers, which are distinct, broad and shovel-shaped from three years. In the first two years the antler is a single spike.

Fallow Deer Behavior and Breeding
Fallow Deer are grazing animals; their preferred habitat is mixed woodland and open grassland. While they primarily feed on large amounts of shrubs and grasses, they will alter their diet readily based on what is prevalent at the time. Fallow have been known to be easily tamed and semi-domesticated in some cases. Agile and fast in case of danger, fallow deer can run up to a maximum speed of 30 mph over short distances. Fallow deer make several vocalizations when communicating and are most frequently heard during mating season. Fawning generally takes place from the last week of May to June and females have 1 young per season, but twins are not uncommon. Fallow deer are resistant to disease, low maintenance and provide excellent venison. Fallow deer have been introduced to over 90 counties in Texas and do well in the Texas climate.
