The Nubian ibex is a desert dwelling goat species found in mountainous areas of Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Yemen and Sudan. It is generally considered to be a subspecies of Alpine ibex. This is a rare breed of animal in the wild.
The Nubian ibex stands around 2.1-2.6 feet tall at the shoulder and males weigh between 100-150 lbs, while females range from 60-90 lbs. Nubian ibex are sandy brown to tan in the summer, generally more of a grayish color in the winter months, with a white underbelly. In males, there is also a dark brown/black stripe down the back. Their short, stout legs are marked with distinct black and white markings.
Nubian ibexes have large, long semicircular thin horns which extend up and then backwards and down. The horns are marked with 24 to 36 knobby ridges along the outer curve (prominent in males). While horns are found on both sexes, they are much larger in males than females. Horns on males grow up to 48 inches long, and with impressive knobs on the outer curve. Female horns, growing 5-14 inches, are much thinner and shorter.

Nubian Ibex Behavior and Breeding
Nubian ibex drink water daily, but are well adapted to dry climates with long periods without available water. Their shiny coats reflect sun and solar radiation and employ a cooling mechanism. Older adult males are often solitary, while females and immature males form small herds, with kids staying with their mothers until age three. They tend to move along rocks and open slopes in search of grasses, shoots and leaves. They will stand on hind legs to reach foliage of low hanging trees and will take to browse in winter when fresh leaves and grasses are at a premium. Females have a gestation of 5-5 1/2 months and have 1-3 kids per season. Males become sexually mature at 2 to 3 years, but are not competitive until age 4. They breed only once per year with a short rutting period generally in the fall between August and October. Life span is normally between 17 and 20 years.
